Volleyball Battles to Four-Set Setback with Birmingham-Southern

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee volleyball team was downed in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) match with Birmingham-Southern in four sets on Sunday afternoon from Juhan Gymnasium.

Final Score: Birmingham-Southern (12-4, 6-1) 3, Sewanee (11-6, 4-3) 1 (25-20, 25-20, 18-25, 25-23)

-Sewanee struggled out of the gate. After the Tigers tied the opening set at two points each, the visitors in Birmingham-Southern scored the next nine points to lead 11-2.

-With BSC having setpoint, 24-13, the Purple and Gold did not go away quietly, as they scored the next seven straight points before BSC ended the set, 25-20.

-The second set was more competitive, as no team had more than a two-point lead early.

-Sewanee tied the set at 14 points apiece thanks to three straight points. However, the Panthers scored the next six points to take the 20-15 advantage.

-The Tigers attempted to counter, but it was the visitors winning the second set, 25-20.

-In the third, leading 14-13, the Tigers outscored the Panthers, 11-4, to avoid the shutout.

-In the fourth set, the Panthers, once again, attempted to run away with the set late. Trailing 16-14, the visitors scored eight straight points to lead 22-16.

-The Tigers countered, scoring seven of nine points to trail 24-23. However, during the rally, an error by Sewanee ended the match in four sets.

-Destiny Stewart recorded 18.5 points with 16 kills and two service aces. She missed a double-double by one with nine digs.

-Lilly Reilly had 10 kills and nine digs.

-Olivia Nichols posted nine kills and digs each with three aces.

-Milea Ray and Alyssa Coats had 10 kills each.

-Caroline Johnson led the match with 22 digs.

Sewanee will make a quick trip to Danville, Ky. for a mid-week SAA match with Centre as the second half of the conference schedule begins.
