SEWANEE, Tenn. - The 2018 cross country programs are set to open the 2018 campaign Friday afternoon at the Mountaintop Invitational, hosted by Covenant College.
BIG SHOES TO FILL: With the loss of Owen Legrone to graduation, who led the team in all races last season, the men's team will have a new top runner in 2018. Four runners, Bram Atkins (3.2 finish among team runners), Ash Midyett (3.3), Ben Murray (3.5) and Jack Barganier (3.8) all finished behind Legrone in races a year ago.
FLYIN' FAULKNER: Hannah Faulkner returns for her senior season as the lead returner for the women's side. The Woodbury, Tenn. native recorded a 3.8 finish among team runners last season and 19th place overall. Competing in one 6K race last season, Faulkner recorded a 24:55.8 mark at the 2017 NCAA South/Southeast Region Championships.
ALWAYS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT: Last season at the South/Southeast Region Championships, all returning runners recorded a personal best at the meet. Murray, who finished third on the team and 105th overall, improved his season-best time by two minutes from the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Championships with a 26:45.6 mark in the 8K event. On the women's side, Adriana Hibarra improved her personal mark by 2:16 with a 25:48.7 time in the 6K race.
LAST SATURDAY IN SEPTEMBER: The Tigers will host the 2018 Sewanee Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 29 at The Course at Sewanee. The 6K women's race will run at 9 a.m., with the men's 8K race to follow at 9:45 a.m.
