Owen Legrone Named Google Cloud Academic All-American

CoSIDA Release

AUSTIN, Texas - Cross country and distance track runner Owen Legrone has been selected as the 18th Sewanee student-athlete to earn a selection with the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Nashville, Tenn. native was named to the Second Team.

The graduating senior is a four-time Southern Athletic Association All-Academic Team representative in cross country, as he earned Second Team honors this past season with an Honorable Mention accolade coming in 2016.

Named a two-time cross country All-Academic Individualist by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), Legrone shattered the school record in the 8K with a 25:31.9 time at the 2017 NCAA S/SE Region Championships, good for an All-Region nod.

Named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District® Team earlier this month, he finished as the team's top runner in all six cross country meets in 2017, averaging a finish of 13th among all participants.

Running distance for the track and field program, Legrone ran personal bests in the indoor mile (4:43.54) in February and the outdoor 5,000 meters (15:54.77) in March, as he has been named to the SAA All-Academic Team three times.

Outside of the classroom, the Internataional and Global Studies major with a German minor is president of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, and is a member of the following honor organizations: Order of the Gown, Order of Omega, Omicron Delta Kappa and Delta Phi Alpha.

"Owen Legrone is a great representation of what an NCAA Division III athlete should be," said head coach Jeff Heitzenrater. "His hard work in the classroom, on the track and trails and in every aspect of his college career, is a fantastic example for future student-athletes at Sewanee. We are very proud of his accomplishments and look forward to watching him continue to shine and succeed."

Legrone is the first student-athlete to earn this award since 2016 when women's tennis player Lindsey Liles C'16 was selected First Team Academic All-American®.

He becomes the second men's cross country/track and field recipient of the award, joining former Tiger Will Copeland C'04, who was a three-time Academic All-American® from 2002-04. A two-time First Team member, Copeland was named the CoSIDA Academic All-American® of the Year for the College Division his senior year.

The Division III Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2017-18 Division III Academic All-America® teams.
