Metzger’s Win at No. 6 Flight Lifts No. 12 Men’s Tennis to Split at Stag Hen Invite

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Sewanee men's tennis team took down No. 15 Gustavus Adolphus, 5-4, in the quarterfinal round of the Stag Hen Invitational, co-hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. In the semifinals against No. 6 CMS, the Tigers were swept, 9-0. Both matches were played at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' campus.

-The Tigers were down 2-1 after doubles play. Jack Metzger/Brandon Kali avoided the shutout with an 8-4 win at the No. 2 flight.

-Moving into singles, Brandon Kali evened the score at two wins a piece with a straight-set victory at the No. 4 flight.

-However, the Gusties won the No. 2 and 3 flights to come within one win of taking the match.

-Trailing 4-2, Sewanee won the final three points to secure the match. After Ryan Olps won the No. 5 flight, Andres Carro downed Patrick Whaling at the No. 1 to even the score at four points each.

-Coming down to the No. 6 flight, Jack Metzger took the opening set, 6-3, but he saw Indraneel Raut force a third set with a 6-4 win to even the point. However, the sophomore rallied to defeat 6-3 to take the match.

-In the semifinals of the tournament, CMS easily took doubles away from the Tigers.

-In singles, the No. 2 and No. 5 flights for the Stags secured the match. Sewanee's Andres Carro played a tight match at the No. 1. After winning the first set, 7-5, the next set went into a tiebreaker, but it was Nikolai Parodi of CMS that won the point.

Sewanee will next play co-host No. 14 Pomona-Pitzer for third place at the Stag Hen Invitational Saturday morning at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
