SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 11, 2017) – For the second straight day, the No. 37 ranked Sewanee men's tennis team rolled over an opponent at home. After defeating Piedmont 8-1 Friday, the Tigers opened SAA play by blanking Centre, 9-0, Saturday, inside the Charlotte Guerry Tennis Center.
"I felt like conditioning played a big part in today's victory," said Sewanee Assistant Coach Felix Mann. "It was a long day out there and our boys responded well under tough conditions. We have been putting in plenty of time on the track and in the weight room and today you could see a real difference in our play."
Sewanee wasted little time taking control of the contest sweeping all three doubles matches. Jack Gray and Fletcher Kerr crushed Akmon and Ko at No. 1, 8-2. A court over, Scott Gallimore and Hamza Khan topped Middleton and Slone by the same 8-2 score at the No. 2 position. Those matches were followed by an 8-3 victory from Alejandro Becker and Hayden Loeb against Henize and Brooks at No. 3.
With a stout 3-0 lead heading into singles, Sewanee never looked back. At No. 1 Andres Carro defeated Akmon in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. ITA All-American Avery Schober then routed Henize at No. 2, 6-1, 6-0.
Now 2-0 this season, Sewanee returns to action in two weeks with matches against Transylvania, against N.C. Wesleyan, and at Mary Washington.
