Sewanee blows out Columbia International to stay unbeaten

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Nov. 16, 2013) – The Sewanee men's basketball team closed out the 2013 Lon Varnell Classic with a 96-66 win over Columbia International, Saturday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.

Early on, both teams kept the game close. Sewanee opened the game on a quick 9-0 run, before CIU responded with an 8-0 spurt of its own.

From there, the Tigers took control. A 17-8 run over the next five minutes pushed Sewanee's lead to 12, 26-14.

During that stretch, the Tigers came alive behind a balanced offense. Seth Brown, Jorden Williams, Robert Veal, Matt Tome, Garrett Heatherly and Anvil Nelson all made field goals.

Sewanee eventually led 50-32 at halftime.

Out of the locker room, Sewanee stayed strong. A three-pointer by Tome extended the lead to 20, 56-36, with 18:07 to play. From there, CIU would not get to within 22 points the remainder of the contest.

Overall, the Tigers shot 53.1 percent from the floor. Additionally, Sewanee forced 12 turnovers while dishing out 17 assists.

Individually, sophomore forward Keshonn Carter led 11 Tigers with a game-high 18 points. He was joined in double figures by Leo Born and Williams, who each finished with 16 points.

Additionally, Brown finished with a complete stat line. The sophomore forward had six points, five rebounds, three steals, two blocks, and one assist.

The Tigers will look to keep rolling with a 7:00 p.m. (EST) contest at regional-rival Covenant, Wednesday.
