Field Hockey Lands Six on ZAG Sports/NFHCA National Academic Squad

GILBERT, Ariz. - The Sewanee field hockey team has six student-athletes selected to the 2018 ZAG Sports/NFHCA National Academic Squad, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced on Wednesday.

Edith Amason, Anne Cleveland, Nikki Ereli, Molly Wheeler, Abbie Wrather and Jo Jo Young were selected.

Amason appears on her first National Academic Squad for the Birmingham, Ala. native. The sophomore played in five games as a defender in 2018.

Cleveland earned All-Southern Athletic Association (SAA) First Team and All-Great Lakes Region Second Team honors in her freshman campaign. The Fort Worth, Texas native started in all 16 games for the Tigers, as she scored one goal at the midfield position.

Ereli collected her first National Academic Squad selection in her senior season. The Houston, Texas native played all 16 games as a defender for the Purple and Gold and recorded three defensive saves. She was also selected to the SAA All-Sportsmanship Team

Wheeler was chosen to her first Academic Squad. The Richmond, Va. native played all 16 contests off the bench and scored one goal and tallied two assists in her freshman campaign.

Wrather was selected to her second straight Academic Squad. The sophomore played in 11 contests with 10 starts this past season. The sophomore recorded three defensive saves.

Young was honored with her third consecutive selection to the squad. The junior tallied one assist and was named All-Conference Second Team as a midfielder.

In total, 51 student-athletes across all six institutions from the SAA were selected to the squad. Below is the breakdown by school:

Concordia Wisconsin - 9
Hendrix - 4
Rhodes - 11
Sewanee - 6
Transylvania - 9

1,746 student-athletes from 147 Division III institutions earned recognition on the 2018 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad.

The Division III National Academic Squad program recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year.

The Sewanee field hockey team finished with a 10-6 record during the 2018 season, and they captured the No. 3 seed in the SAA Tournament.
