ATLANTA - For the second time this season, Sewanee forward Ceara Caffrey has been selected as the SAA Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week, the Southern Athletic Association announced Monday.
Caffrey had another phenomenal week for the Tigers. The junior recorded her second four-goal performance of her career in an 8-2 win over Converse on Saturday.
After scoring the first goal of the game in the eighth minute, Converse took the lead on back-to-back goals in the 11th and 20th minutes. Caffrey brought the Tigers back with back-to-back goals of her own in about a minute and a half span. She also added a goal in the second half.
In Sunday's game against Bridgewater, the Tigers struggled to get shots off for most of the contest. Trailing 1-0 with 10:30 to go, Caffrey broke the shutout with the game-tying goal. After a nearly hour and a half lightning delay, the contest was forced to overtime. In the 79th minute, the Scituate, Mass. native scored the game-winner to help extend Sewanee's winning streak to six games.
On the season, Caffrey is leading the SAA in goals with 15, and she is on pace to shatter the conference record of 22.
In the latest NCAA statistics, Caffrey leads the nation in goals per game (2.14) and points per game (4.29), as the team is 15th nationally in goals per game (4.29) and 16th in points per game (10.57).
Caffrey and the rest of the Tigers return to the field Sunday with a non-conference trip to DePauw.
