Sewanee wins SAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament with 11-8 victory at Centre
DANVILLE, Ky. (April 27, 2014) – For the second straight season, the Sewanee women's lacrosse team won the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament with an 11-8 victory over Centre, Sunday, at the South Campus Complex.
A year ago, Sewanee also defeated the Colonels. The Tigers have also won 13 matches for the second straight season and ended the year with eight straight victories.
Both Sewanee and Centre would stay close throughout the remainder of the first half. Tied 7-7 entering the second half, junior Sally Anne Greenwood scored with 28 minutes left.
Katie Riddle then pushed the Tigers' lead to 9-7 with a goal from Richardson.
After the Colonels' only goal in the second half, Grimm fired in a shot from Riddle with 12:03 left.
Payton Fields then added a late insurance goal off a free position shot with 8:20 to play.
Despite being outshot and also having fewer draw controls, Sewanee goalkeeper Crawfor Horan led the Tigers to the win. Horan, the Tournament's MVP, made eight saves.
Fellow All-Tournament honoree Grimm finished with three goals and one assist. Riddle, Greenwood, and Richardson added two goals while Fields and Reed added one.
