Demorest, Ga. (Feb. 15, 2014) – Three goals by sophomore Katie Riddle and junior Ellie Murphy, along with five goals by Sally Anne Greenwood, helped the Sewanee women's lacrosse team to a season-opening 16-12 win at Piedmont, Saturday at the Walker Athletic Complex.
The Tigers opened the match with eight goals in the first half. The Lady Lions managed four goals in the opening 30 minutes.
Out of the locker room, Greenwood pushed the Tigers' lead to five, 9-4, after she scored off an assist from Murphy.
After a goal by Mallory Grimm, Greenwood managed another goal off a free position shot.
Piedmont would rally over the next seven minutes with a brief 3-0. However, any chances of a comeback by the Lady Lions was short lived after Grimm, Riddle, Wittney Reed, and Murphy pushed the Tigers ahead 15-8 with 11:31 to play.
Piedmont would add a few late scores to pull closer by the end of the match.
Overall, Sewanee outshot Piedmont by four, 30-26. The Tigers and Lady Lions were fairly close in ground balls and draw controls.
Along with Riddle, Greenwood, and Murphy, Grimm and Reed finished with a pair of goals while Payton Fields scored once.
On defense, freshman goalkeeper Crawford Horan earned her first career win after she finished with 10 saves.
Mckynsey Douglas led Piedmont and all scorers with six goals on seven shots.
Sewanee will open Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play with a 2:00 p.m. match at Rhodes, February 22.
