SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 29, 2013) – The Sewanee women's lacrosse team blew out Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Berry 21-6, Friday, at Puett Field.
With the win, Sewanee is now 9-4 overall and 3-0 in league play. Additionally, the Tigers locked up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming SAA Tournament which Sewanee will host April 27-28.
The Tigers wasted little time jumping out front after Mallory Grimm, Molly Arnold, Sally Anne Greenwood, Olivia Vietor, and Ellie Murphy gave Sewanee a quick 7-0 advantage with less than six minutes off the clock.
After Rachel Aiken got Berry on the board with a free position goal, Sewanee kept rolling. An additional goal by Arnold followed by scores from Caitlin-Jean Juricic, Lillie Belle Viebranz, and Wittney Reed pushed the lead to 14-2 with 12:56 left.
Sewanee then closed the half with another goal by Juricic and a score by Vietor off a pass from Greenwood.
Freshman Katie Riddle then closed the match with a pair of goals.
On defense Alexis Crittenden, Murphy, Emily Hylton, Dori Wilson, and keeper Sammy Strasburger played well. In fact, the Tiger backline held SAA leading scorer Kristan Dziurzynski scoreless for the first time all season.
The Tigers will now step outside of league play with a pair of non-conference matches against regionally ranked programs Denison and Wooster next weekend.
