Tigers open SAA play with a strong 18-7 win at Centre

DANVILLE, Ky. (March 15, 2014) – Led by four goals from Hayden Byrd and Michael Morris, the Sewanee men's lacrosse team opened Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play with an 18-7 win at Centre, Saturday, at Farris Stadium.

The Tigers improved their record to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Sewanee opened the match with six goals in the first period. Byrd opened the scoring off an assist from Morris. Morris then followed with an unassisted goal on a man-up opportunity.

Baylor Koch, Morris, Matthew Stiefel, and Reed Daniel all closed the first period with goals.

In the second, Centre outscored the Tigers 3-2.

Up 8-6 to start the third period, Sewanee came out of the locker room strong. Byrd quickly opened the second half with a goal with only 45 seconds off the clock.

The Tigers then followed by scoring nine of the next 10 goals. During that stretch, Daniel, Stiefel, Morris, Byrd, Davis Brown, and Jess Hilb all fired in shots.

As a team, Sewanee outshot the Colonels 62-35. The Tigers also finished with more face-offs, 18-8, and groundballs, 39-27.

Individually, Morris finished with four goals and a season-high five assists. Byrd also played well on the attack with four goals and an assist. Stiefel, Brown, Daniel, and Koch all finished with more than one goal.

Additionally, Morris and Hal Smith finished with seven groundballs while Tommy Healy made 14 saves on 35 shots.

The Tigers return to action at Washington & Lee Wednesday, March 19. That contest is schedule to begin at 5:00 p.m. (EST) in Lexington, Va. The Tigers and W&L last meet in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
