Sewanee earns a key SAA win, defeats BSC, 10-5

SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 29, 2013) – Behind seven straight goals in the first half, the Sewanee men's lacrosse team earned a key Southern Athletic Association (SAA) victory with a 10-5 win over rival Birmingham-Southern Friday at Harris Stadium.

Coming into the match, both the Tigers (8-2, 3-0 SAA) and Panthers (4-7, 2-1 SAA) were tied with Hendrix atop the league standings. After Friday's matches, Sewanee and Warriors remain the only two programs without a league loss.

After a BSC goal by Brennan Ott, Sewanee responded with a 7-0 run. During that stretch, Reed Daniel, James Millard, Michael Morris, Pierce Leonard, and Drew Lincoln scored to give the Tigers a commanding 7-1 lead at the half.

After the Panthers scored two out the three goals in the third period, Hal Smith and Ian Gillan closed any chance of a BSC comeback with scores to start the fourth.

As a team, Sewanee forced more turnovers, finished with more groundballs, and outshot the Panthers.

Additionally, the Tiger defense played well behind Slater Ottenritter, Brandon Barrett, and keeper Tommy Healy.

The Tigers, winners of four straight, will look to extend their winning streak with a 1:00 p.m. match against Millsaps, Saturday.
