Tigers open with a 14-5 win over Fontbonne

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 16, 2013) – The Sewanee men's lacrosse team opened the season with a strong 14-5 win over Fontbonne, Saturday, on McGee Field at Harris Stadium.

In the first period, Sewanee jumped out quickly when Davis Brown and Cotter Brown added scores.

Up 2-0 to start the second, the Tigers continued to roll. Scores by James Millard and another goal by Davis Brown pushed the lead to 4-0 with 3:01 left in the half.

After Riley O'Neil finally added a goal for Fontbonne, Pierce Leonard added his first goal of the season with 25 seconds left.

Out of the locker room Sewanee would add six additional goals, including four straight to close the third period.

In the fourth period, Fontbonne added two quick goals by Adam Walker and Brian Furrow.

However, after their lead was cut to just six, 11-5, the Tigers responded. Michael Morris, Cotter Brown, and Hal Smith closed the game with three straight goals over the final five minutes.

Individually, Davis Brown and Leonard led the attack with three goals each.

Additionally, Morris and Cottor Brown finished with two scores.

Midfielder Colin Benecke led Fontbonne with a team-high two goals on six shots.

Defensively, junior goalkeeper Tommy Healy earned his first win of the season after he finished with six saves and three ground balls.

The Tigers return to action next Saturday against Wittenberg. That game is scheduled to be played at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tenn., beginning at 1:00 p.m.
