SEWANEE, Tenn. - Announced by second-year head coach Travis Rundle, the Sewanee football team has posted its 2018 schedule.
The 124th season of football on the Cumberland Plateau features one ranked foe, and two that are receiving votes in D3football.Com's preseason poll.
Sewanee will open the campaign on Sept. 1 with a trip to Kenyon (Ohio). The Tigers hold an 8-1 record over the Lords, including a 45-20 win last season that snapped Sewanee's 19-game losing streak.
After a road contest to start the year, the Purple and Gold will have three straight contests at Historic Hardee McGee Field at Harris Stadium. The first of those three straight contests will be against rival Washington & Lee (Va.) on Sept. 8. The Generals are receiving votes in the preseason poll by D3football.Com.
The teams will meet for the 67th time, with W&L having the upper hand, 42-24. Sewanee is seeking their first win against the Generals since 2014.
Week 3's matchup will be the Southern Athletic Association opener for Sewanee, as Austin (Texas) makes the trip from the Lone Star State on Sept. 15. Winning the last three meetings in a row, the Tigers are just 12-14 all-time against the Roos.
Family Weekend will occur on Sept. 22, as Millsaps wraps up the three-game homestand. Edging out with a 17-13 win over the Tigers last season, the Majors have won the last 12 contests, with Sewanee's last victory coming in 2005 in Jackson, Miss. The Majors hold the upper hand in the all-time series, leading 43-25-3.
The final Saturday in September will see the Tigers hitting the road to square off with Hendrix. Despite winning the first two meetings all-time, the Purple and Gold will be looking to snap a four-game losing skid to the Warriors, who held off the Tigers' comeback bid, 48-42, a year ago.
Week 6 of the season will see the Tigers wrap up a two-game road swing. The Tigers will make the two-hour trip to Mount Berry, Ga. to face defending SAA Champion Berry, ranked 22nd in the D3football preseason poll. The Vikings and Tigers will square off in an evening contest. contest on Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. CT.
Sewanee will return home on Oct. 13 for a showdown with Birmingham-Southern under the lights. The matchup will take place at 6 p.m. at Historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium. The Purple and Gold snapped a three-game losing skid to the Panthers with a 34-13 victory last season in Birmingham.
Sewanee will next travel to Trinity (Texas) for Week 8 on Oct. 20. The Purple and Gold will look to win over the Texas Tigers for the first time since the 1992 season.
Homecoming and Hall of Fame Weekend will take place on Oct. 27 on the Domain. The Tigers will entertain the Lynx of Rhodes for the Edmund Orgill Trophy. Despite Rhodes having the upper hand in the Orgill Trophy with a 34-28-1 mark, Sewanee still leads the all-time series, 42-40-3.
The 2018 regular season concludes on Nov. 3 with a trip to Centre. Also receiving votes in the D3football preseason poll, the Colonels have the 44-30-1 advantage in the all-time series, and the Tigers are seeking their first win against the Kentucky institution since 2005.
In Rundle's first season, the Tigers finished with a 3-7 overall record.
