SEWANEE, Tenn.  9/4/10 – Freshman Willow Smith (Rhinelander, Wisc., Culver Academy) and junior John Gilmer (Mobile, Ala., St. Paul's) turned in team best performances for the Sewanee Tigers at the Sewanee Cross Country Invitational held today at the Sewanee Golf Club.

Smith finished the 6K women’s course with a time of 23:30 good for 12th place overall.  Cara Martin (Oklahoma City, Okla., Casady) was close behind coming across in 18th at 24:03.

Sewanee finished fifth in the ten team women’s field

 

Tess Gallegos of Emory University was the women’s individual winner posting a time of 22:15.  Emory captured the team title.

 

In the 8K men’s race, Gilmer turned in a time of 27:35, which place him 11th overall.  Chris Hague (Kensington, Md., Bullis) followed in 16th with a time of 27:48.

 

The Tiger men were sixth in the nine team field.

 

Emory University and Rhodes College tied for the men’s team title.  Hirbo Hirbo of North Alabama University was winner of the men’s race with a time of 26:26.

"I am proud of how our team started the season today," stated cross country coach Jeff Heitzenrater following the races. "We were led by some strong performances by our race leaders ... John Gilmer and Chris Hague on the men's team and Willow Smith and Cara Martin on the women's. Those four will have a great shot at some post season awards later this year. We had some other very good performances from our team and I look forward to working with them to continue to shoot for solid race times this season. I like the dedication and drive I see from this group and I think it will lead to very good individual and team results this year."

 

The Sewanee men’s and women’s teams will be back in action on Saturday, September 18 at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville.
