Sewanee Adds Garikes and Green to Roster

Sewanee, Tenn. – Sewanee coach David Poggi announced today that Ryan Garikes (Washington, D.C.) and Matt Green (Jacksonville, Florida) will join the Tigers' Class of 2014.

Ryan Garikes, a 5’9” midfielder/defender, joins the team from the Saint Stephens & Saint Agnes School in Alexandria, Virginia. He lettered four years as a starting defender and led his team as captain in his junior and senior years. In his final season, he was named to the Interstate Athletic (IAC) All-Conference team.

With his club team, the PAC Premier out of Northern Virginia, he helped his team finish in the top four each year the Virginia State Cup, the last year as runner-up.

Ryan was a multi-sport athlete in high school as well, lettering in lacrosse, hockey, and football. He has most recently helped his lacrosse team win the VISAA Division I State Championship playing as a defensive midfielder.

“Ryan has proven that he has the desire and the ability to win, given his many athletic and academic achievements. He is capable of playing any role on the field, and because of this versatility, will help create an environment of success for our program”, Poggi said of Ryan.

Matt Green, a 5’9” midfielder, played four years at Episcopal High School as an attacking center midfielder. As a player there he helped lead the team to a District Championship, a Regional Championship and the first Final Four appearance in the school’s history. He was also named to the All-District Team as a junior and senior, and was selected to the Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-Star game for his play during his senior year.

In addition to his many athletic achievements, Matt was highly involved in academic pursuits and community service projects as well. He was a member of the National Junior Honor Society and received the Academic Achievement Award for Athletes from 2007-2010. He received the President’s Volunteer Service Award from 2007-2009 and was involved in numerous mission trips around the world, traveling to Zambia, China, and Costa Rica.

“Matt will bring a great attacking ability and a calming presence with the ball to our team. Knowing his background playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars Soccer Club, we are confident that he will use that experience to grow into a very good player and contribute to this team over the next four years”, concluded Poggi.
