Sewanee Volleyball Taps Cortese as New Head

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Jessica Cortese has been named the next head volleyball coach for Sewanee, according to Sewanee AD Mark Webb.


Cortese comes to the Mountain from the Maclay School in Tallahassee, Florida, where she was the volleyball coach and a teacher. She has compiled a 60-28 record at the helm of Maclay’s squad and won three district championships, two regional championships and was the 2008 Big Bend Coach-of-the-Year.


Cortese earned a M.S. from Florida State University and was a graduate assistant coach while there. She is a Cum laude graduate of Gettysburg College (B.A. Psychology). As a player at Gettysburg, Cortese was All-American, All-Region, conference Player-of-the-Year and was the team captain.


The Lancaster, Pennsylvania native attended Hempfield High School, where she is a 2010 inductee of the Athletics Hall of Fame. She played volleyball as well as soccer. Cortese will begin her duties July 1 and plans to live in Sewanee.


“I would like to thank Mr. Webb for giving me this opportunity to join the Sewanee community as Head Volleyball Coach,” added Cortese. “I am honored to be joining such an elite academic institution and an athletic department of the highest caliber. I believe the players are committed to working hard and improving during the upcoming season, and I am excited to hit the ground running with recruiting.”
