SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee hosted Whittier in men’s lacrosse Saturday night and after leading 8-2 at the half, the visiting Poets topped the Tigers 12-6. Sewanee rallied, scoring four unanswered goals in the third quarter to bring the score to 8-6, but the Poets held the Tigers off for the six-goal win.
Thomas Moore (Dallas, Texas, Episcopal) and
Neat Clark (Houston, Texas, Houston Episcopal School) led Sewanee’s scoring with two goals each.
Carson Pfeifer (Louisville, Ky., Collegiate)and
Drew Lincoln (Princeton, N.J., The Hill School) each chipped in a Sewanee goal, too. For Whittier, Mike Neumayer led with four goals.
Stewart Calder (New Canaan, Conn., New Canaan HS) and
Spencer Graves (Lynchburg, Va., Episcopal) split time in goal for Sewanee.
As a team, Whittier outshot Sewanee 37-30 and picked up 28 ground balls compared to 30 for Sewanee. Sewanee also had a 10-9 edge in faceoffs won and Whittier led 16-10 in successful clears.
Marty Johnson (Charlotte, N.C., Charlotte Catholic) won eight of 10 attempted faceoffs for Sewanee.
The Tigers are 1-8 so far and will play at Fontbonne and Mt. St. Joseph next weekend. Whittier is now 6-3.
