SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Coach Robert Black announced today that Jake Wissing, a 2003 DePauw University graduate, has joined the Tiger coaching staff as an assistant coach and will direct the offensive line. Wissing comes from DePauw University where he served in the same capacity since 2007. “We have the utmost respect for DePauw as a university and certainly their football program, so we were very excited to have a chance to speak with Jake about our opening,” said Black. “In getting to know Jake, it was clear that he is a knowledgeable, energetic teacher, who communicates extremely well with people. He will make an immediate impact on our university and our football program from X’s and O’s to recruiting. We also welcome Jake’s soon to be wife, Kelsea to the Mountain as they begin their lives together. We welcome both to our Sewanee Football Family.”
While at DePauw, Wissing coached the offensive line and tight ends and served as the Tigers’ co-recruiting coordinator. DePauw compiled a 23-7 overall record, garnered one co-SCAC championship in 2009 and earned the school’s first ever Division III playoff bid during Wissing’s three years on the staff. Under his direction, the DePauw offensive line excelled, finishing 2009 ranked 11th in Division III for fewest sacks allowed per game (0.60). The team finished tied for 1st in Division III with two lost fumbles for the season and 2nd in time of possession at 35:16 per game. During the ‘09 season, the offense broke or tied ten school records and finished the season ranked 26th or better in six Division III statistical categories. Wissing coached ten players to All-SCAC honors in three years as well as one All-Region honoree.
Prior to his arrival at DePauw, Wissing spent one season coaching the offensive line at Division II Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana. The 2006 team finished with an 8-3 record and earned a GLFC championship. He arrived at Saint Joseph’s after serving as the running backs coach at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont for one year.
The 2003 DePauw graduate spent three years playing under legendary DePauw coach Nick Mourouzis and served as student assistant his senior year. Following graduation from DePauw, Wissing earned a master’s of professional studies and spent two years serving as a graduate assistant at Alfred (NY) University. While at Alfred, he coached the running backs and earned an ECAC Northeast Division Championship.
Wissing says he is “looking forward to joining the Sewanee family and bringing a championship to the Mountain. Coach Black, the staff and the school have created a first-class program and I am excited to be a part of it.”
