SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee hosted Mount Saint Joseph in men’s lacrosse on Saturday and also honored Matt Councill , Sewanee’s only senior, in the last Tiger home game of 2009.

MSJ got out to a quick lead and was ahead 6-2 at the halftime break. In the second half, Sewanee came out fighting and outscored the Lions 5-2. Neat Clark (Houston, Texas, Houston Episcopal School) pulled the Tigers to within one for an 8-7 tally with his goal with 30 seconds remaining. Will Grimes (Marietta, Ga., Harrison HS) took a hard shot late in a try for the tying goal, but a great save by Eric Wolery sealed the 8-7 win for the Lions.

Clark and Will Finney (Baltimore, Md., Gilman School) led Sewanee’s scoring with a pair of goals each. Anderson Morgan and Chris Uselman each had a pair of goals to lead the Lions as well. Wolery logged 16 saves on the day for Mount Saint Joseph. Sewanee had 32 shots on the day compared to 35 for the Lions. The Tigers held the advantage in ground balls, though and got 29 compared to 16 for the Lions.

Sewanee falls to 2-9 and will play Birmingham-Southern on Wednesday before heading to Colorado this weekend to play Hendrix and Colorado College.
